Walter+Eliza Hall Institute (“WEHI”) is a one of Australia’s leading biomedical research organisations. With over 1,100 employees, WEHI addresses some of the major health challenges of our time, with a focus on cancer, infection, inflammation, immune disorders, development and ageing. The Institute is committed to delivering long term improvements in treating and diagnosing diseases. WEHI is seeking to recruit an experienced lawyer with expertise in IP commercialisation to join the legal team on a 12 month contract.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • providing legal advice across the organisation, including to the Commercialisation team and scientists, across a range of matters including commercialisation, intellectual property, technology transfer, collaborative development and licensing.
  • drafting, reviewing and providing advice on all types of research-related contracts including commercial agreements, research collaboration agreements, data/material transfers agreements, confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements and licenses.
  • support the mission and activities of the Business Development Office by providing legal, strategy and risk advice on commercialisation projects from an early stage.
  • support the scientists by providing advice on legal matters arising from research activities, clinical trials and contract management and compliance.
  • assist with the provision of internal training and be the "go-to" person for scientists and other staff on questions around research-related contracts and commercialisation.

About you

You offer experience in commercial law relating to IP management, commercialisation, technology transfer and licensing. Exposure to life sciences and patents will be highly regarded but is not essential. You offer extensive contracts experience and the ability to partner with your stakeholders to provide practical and commercially focused solutions and legal advice. You have a high degree of personal and professional ethics and integrity. You are capable of taking on responsibility and building effective working relationships in a collaborative fashion.

This role suits a senior lawyer with 6+ years' experience seeking to work part time (3 days/week).

The company is seeking to recruit a Senior Legal Counsel into a 12 months contract role, reflecting a company with a culture of growth. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will join a close knit in-house legal team that works collaboratively to provide a responsive and effective legal service across the business. You will guide the business through a broad range of matters in a way that strikes an appropriate balance between achieving commercial objectives and sensibly managing legal risk. The work will be varied and requires a lawyer who is happy to roll up their sleeves and contribute.

You will provide broad advice to the businesses including in relation to:

• competition and consumer law;
• intellectual property;
• advertising and marketing; 
• brand management;

• contracts; and
• distribution and logistics.


EBOS Group seeks a commercial lawyer with at least 5 years’ post admission experience. In-house or secondment experience will be highly regarded. More experienced lawyers seeking to work 4 days per week will be considered. You are an independent individual who enjoys a high-level of responsibility and autonomy and brings a commercial outlook. This is a fast-faced commercial environment so the role suits a lawyer with outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to juggle a range of priorities.

This role is a fabulous opportunity to work with a highly regarded General Counsel in a rapidly growing business.
