Description

This position offers an abundant array of opportunities to work and act in many different areas within Family Law including the following:

  • Property Settlement
  • Divorce and Separation
  • Multi-state disputes regarding separation
  • Reconciliation Agreements
  • Termination of Parental Rights

As a Family Law solicitor within this company, you will be able to develop your legal skills as a negotiator, and work collaboratively with other practitioners across various alternative dispute resolution platforms. You will be able to progress your advocacy skills through regular court appearances, work in litigation across a number of jurisdictions including - Federal Court, Family Court, Childrens Court, Magistrates Court and ACT local courts. Alongside, you will receive comprehensive support from senior solicitors and a specialist paralegal team.

Profile

  • 0- 5 years’ experience PQE in Family Law
  • Implement a high level of attention to detail with clients and pride yourself on the quality of service.
  • Strong inter-personal skills
  • Excellent ability to draft legal documents and correspondents in clear and concise language
  • Who is able to take direction from senior managers and lawyers
  • Be an experienced litigator looking to take your career to the next level
  • Who is comfortable presenting in Court and eager to grow their skills as an advocate

Qualifications & experience

  • At least 2 years previous experience working in a law firm and solid secretarial skills
  • Exceptional document production skills

  • Tech savvy - Experience working with Actionstep is highly desirable

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Reception duties as required including answering of telephones, undertaking conflict checks, responding to enquiries and email management.
  • Assistance with firm invoicing including maintaining records of time, time recording, disbursements, fees, trust account transactions and debt recovery for the firm.
  • Monitoring and managing inboxes including filing emails and electronic and paper file management.
  • File and matter management including typing and preparing complex documents, liaising with clients, filing material with the Courts
  • Client engagement and management on behalf of Directors.
  • Developing firm practices and procedures in consultation with the Directors.
  • General administrative support as required

Job Description – Legal Assistant to Special Counsel

MEJ is looking for an experienced legal assistant to work in a full-time role assisting a Special Counsel in a busy personal injury practice in Canberra.

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities

The work undertaken would be predominantly in the area of workers’ compensation litigation.

The main tasks and responsibilities for the role include:

  • Communication with clients daily via email and telephone
  • Liaising with witnesses/solicitors/barristers via email and telephone
  • Drafting letters, emails and other legal documents on behalf of special counsel
  • Filing and database management
  • Calendar/diary management
  • Booking medical appointments for clients
  • Payment of invoices
  • Facilitate the meeting of deadlines by keeping multiple agendas and providing timely reminders
  • Archiving matters once resolved

Education and Experience

  • Prior experience in a law firm is essential – experience in the area of personal injury litigation would be highly regarded.
  • Experience with legal software (LEAP)

Key Competencies

  • Proficiency in English (ability to speak a second language is not essential but would be highly regarded)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Outstanding time management and typing skills
  • Ability to be proactive, identify issues and identify areas that could benefit from greater assistance
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Strong planning and organising skills
  • Strong communication skills and phone manner
